What are some general carpet cleaning tips?

There are many simple tips to keep your carpet looking good for years and  years to come. All of these tips are the up keep that you should be doing around having us come in and clean your house once or more a year.

  • Make sure you are vacuuming your carpets preferably as much as possible. The worst thing for your carpet is to let soil sit and get matted into the fibers. This is what creates your traffic lanes in your house as well as the repetition on stepping on the same fibers over and over again which in turn will shorten their length and make the carpet look darker, dingy, and matted.
  • There is always one thing that will make your carpets life last extremely long, and that would be speedy treatment. The faster the treatment the shallower the penetration into the carpet, the less severe the stain/spot. The one thing you always want to prevent is the liquid or other spill from reaching the padding of the carpet. The problem once it reaches the padding in the carpet is we could come in and do the carpet cleaning but the left over stain that has saturated your padding will lift up during the cleaning process and a couple weeks after the carpet has been cleaned the stain may start to seep through the fibers and re appear. (We do sell a product to protect your carpet that helps increase your window to dab up the liquid before it reaches pad penetration. Give us a call and we can explain more. Short and simple it helps bead up any liquid and almost form a temporary barrier on your carpet.)
  • If you do spill something on your carpet and you are using a spot cleaner to get it up what you want to do is hit the outer edges of the stain first. If you hit the middle of the stain, and try to clean it that way you will end up expanding the cleaning area by pushing the left over liquid/soil outwards. When you would from outside in this keeps your stain to the area that it is, and will stop expansion. If you do end up using a spot cleaner make sure you try to dab it out as much as possible. The last thing you want to do is leave a residue on the carpet. You can help prevent this by sprinkling table salt on the spot that you cleaned, and then thoroughly vacuum that spot. If there is a left over residue it will be seen when we clean the carpets. The left over residue will leave a big white spot on your carpet where you once cleaned that doesn’t look to appealing so like I said make sure you get as much of the residue out as possible.
