Pet accidents on hardwood flooring require a quick response. Learn how to eliminate pet urine stains and odor correctly.
If your dog or cat has an accident on your hardwood floor, you need to become a quick response team. If pet urine isn’t immediately removed, it can permanently alter the wood’s smell and appearance to the point that you’ll need to replace the floor to eliminate the smell.
Cleaning pet stains on wood floors as soon as possible can ensure odorless, clean floors.
Remove pet urine quickly
Immediately blot up the urine with paper towels. Press firmly on the towels to draw the urine out of the wood. You may need to repeat this step multiple times to soak up as much as possible.
Mop up pet urine
Get a bottle of enzyme-based floor cleaner from your pet store. Squirt about 2 ounces of fluid into a bucket and fill the rest with hot water, then mop the affected wood with the solution. Enzymatic floor cleaners break down proteins in urine, which helps eliminate associated odors.
If you don’t have an enzyme-based floor cleaner, vigorously scrub the area with a mix of dish washing detergent and baking soda for the same results.
Avoid urine odor
After air drying, pour vinegar on the pet stain and let it sit for 24 hours. This will pull out residual urine and odor that may have penetrated deeply into the floor. The vinegar may produce an unpleasant smell, but this should disappear within the 24 hours.
