How to Stop Area Rugs from Slipping

Area rugs can serve many purposes, from protecting carpeting and flooring to pulling the room together with its visual appeal, however, many decorative rugs don’t have anti-slip backing.

This article with helpful tips on how to stop a slipping area rug comes from SFGate.

How to Stop Area Rugs from Slipping

Most rugs slip on tile, linoleum, and hardwood floors.

Caulk Method

  1. Firstly, you’ll want to turn the rug upside down. Make sure you smooth it out flat so there are no wrinkles.
  2. Next, place a tube of clear acrylic latex caulk in a caulking gun. Remove the tip of the caulk and pull the trigger on the gun until the caulk comes out of the tube.
  3. Run a bead of caulk across the back of the rug within 1 inch of the binding along one edge. Run additional lines down the entire length of the rug, spacing each line about 6 inches apart.
  4. Lastly, dry the caulk overnight until it’s no longer tacky. Flip the rug over and place where desired.

The caulk is meant to prevent the rug from sliding on the floor. Wet or tacky caulk that hasn’t dried yet may damage flooring, so be sure it’s completely dry before flipping over.

Tape Method

  1. To start, measure the edge of the rug with a measuring tape. Make sure you measure corner to corner for all four sides.
  2. Cut a length of double-sided tape or rug gripper tape to match the measurements of the rug. Cut a piece for each edge of the rug as well.
  3. Peel the backing from the tape and stick it to the back of the rug. Run a piece of tape down each edge.
  4. Remove the second backing from the exposed side of the tape and place the rug in the desired location.
  5. After placing the rug down, smooth out any bumps and allow the tape to adhere to the floor.

Area Rug on Carpet

You might think that if your area rug is on a carpet you have no risk of slips, trips, or falls, however, if you unexpectedly catch your foot on the side of the area rug you could go tumbling to the floor.

Not to mention, adhering your area rug to the carpet can keep it from buckling.

  1. First, measure the length and width of your area rug.
  2. Purchase a roll of double-sided carpet tape and a roll of non-slip rubber shelf liner. You will want enough shelf liner to cover the bottom of your area rug within two inches of each edge.
  3. Turn the rug upside down and cut strips of double-sided tape to extended across the width of the rug, leaving a two-inch border on each side. Space the strips 12 inches apart.
  4. Cut your shelf liner to fit over the double-sided tape. You might need multiple pieces. Press the shelf liner down over the tape and leave no sticky areas exposed.
  5. Flip the rug back over, and position as desired.

Remember, over time non-slip liners gather dust and lose their stickiness, so periodically replace them.
