We have seen many cases where wheel chairs leave many different marks on carpets ranging from rubber residue to grease, and oil makrs on the carpets. The continuous rolling over the floors can shorten them much faster then regular wear and tear as well. We talked about this question for a long time to try to help our customers out and we could only come up with one solution that wouldn’t be easy but could work.
-The first thing you will have to do is find a hardware store, or some other place that will sell you slabs of fiberglass.
-Then what you should do is cut them to the size that you will have an extra 12 inches on each side of your wheelchair.(any shorter and there will be potential for people to get stuck etc)
-After you have them cut like this you can come home measuring the room you need to put these pieces in, and try to lay them to size in the pathway that the person usually utilizes. This will keep the wheels off of your carpet, and will allow them to roll freely.
-One thing you must do if you do decide to go this route is once a week make sure to pick up the slabs and give a thorough cleaning to the entire carpet. You will want to allow the carpet fibers to breathe, and be pulled back to full length so you dont have a matted pathway in your room, and the cleaning will help prevent contrast lines from where your carpet is exposed to dirt and where it is not.
We know this isn’t the easiest thing to do, but we have seen carpets destroyed by wheel chairs, and we don’t want to see that happen to you.
There is one other product out there that they make to cover the wheels on your chair, but many people tried them and have found that they fall off and get stuck int he spokes etc.
