Why you shouldn’t put down adhesive area carpet backing?

I know it can be annoying when your area rug moves around, but realistically you are doing yourself more damage if you decide to adhere your carpet to the underlying one.  Over time this piece will eventually mend your fibers together, and cause irreversible damage to the underlying carpeting.  Also if the adhesion gets too strong and you go to remove the area carpet you may actually rip pieces of the carpet.  The best thing to put under the carpet to prevent sliding is one of the perforated rubber mats.  This way it won’t slide and you are still getting air flow.  Be careful though to make sure you are cleaning under it and checking the condition of the rubber to make sure it isn’t getting tacky or causing any problems.  Every once in a while you will also want to pull the rubber up and vacuum where it lays.
